Another night out! Here I am at the Main Street Buffet located at downtown Las Vegas. It is a busy Wednesday evening, the line is spiraling to the entrance. Here is a little tip, if your party includes a person in a wheelchair walk right up to the emerald line.

What’s on the menu tonight? As I walk around the horse shoe type serving counters; Salad bar, fruit bar(maybe three different fruits), a pasta bar, prime rib section, Mexican section, Asian section, and a Hawaiian section. Across from the hot food section is a huge section of deserts.

Tonight is prime rib night, so of course I start of with a generous serving of juicy prime rib. I walk around to look at what else they have to offer, I end up in the Asian and Hawaiian section. I fill my plate with fried rice, dim sum, Buk Choy stew with what looked like mushrooms, Kalua pig, smothered with some oxtail stew.

As I dig in the Buc Choy was a bit too much for me. It had a hint of hot mustard or horseradish, I don’t know but it ruined the dish for me. I dig into the dim sum which was wrapped in some kind of leaf, didn’t care for it. The rest of my meal was satisfactory.

All in all it was a descent meal. For desert I tried the chocolate cake and some vanilla ice cream. It was excellent! I would recommend the Garden Court Buffet at main street for a good meal. Tip if your visiting and a guest of the Boyed gaming hotel and casinos don’t forget your coupon books! Until the next adventure! Your friends at 9thiland!

Aloha Kitchen in Las Vegas on Decature and Sahara

Ring!! Ring!! Ring!!

Aloha kitchen: “Thank you for calling Aloha Kitchen on Decature and Sahara how can I help you?”

Hmmmm. Did I call the right place?

From the sound of the young males voice I swear he was Mexican. Well whatever, he said Aloha Kitchen lol….

Me: “Yes may I please make a phone order?”

Aloha kitchen: “yes”

Me: “Can I get a Laulau plate and six musubi’s please.”

Aloha kitchen: “anything else?”

Me: “no that’s it.”

Aloha kitchen: “okay your total is $11.89”

Well I am not too certain of the price he actually gave me. It was $11 something, buahahahahah….

Ok so I pull up to the good ‘ole parking at the Aloha Kitchen location. I’ve been here on many occasions and it seems that this place is getting more and more ghetto. The parking lot, deserted, dark, dirty, the lighting of this parking lot sucks if your dining at night. So anyways, it’s a Sunday morning, a little after 12:00 A.M.

I pull in and the place has a good amount of people. A pretty good crowd in the bar and in the dining area. Hmm something is wrong, where is all the Hawaiians? Someone on Facebook made a comment on that the other day. We were all putting our two cents in, on how we never see any Hawaiians working.

You see Hispanics at the registers and in the kitchen….hmmmmm….

Well all in all, my food was exceptional. I took a picture before digging in. a little dry and tuff but hey, what can you do when your stuck in the desert and nothing is open right.

Until next time……

Aloha Kitchen (Las Vegas Sahara/Decatur)

By: J. Fox

2605 South Decatur Boulevard
Las Vegas, NV 89102-8592

I was feeling a little hungry after work (11:00 P.M) and had a craving for Hawaiian Food. The only place I know that would be open this late was Aloha Kitchen which on Sahara and Decatur. First impressions is a make or brake you. I have been to Aloha Kitchen in the past, but I decided to share my experience with you on this particular occasion.

As I arrived at Aloha Kitchen it looked pretty busy. The parking lot could use a little more lights and someone to clean up the trash left by customers. There were about a dozen or so individuals hanging out in the parking lot. Some with their stereos on high and people just lounging like I was at Maili beach on O’ahu. Kind of gheto if you ask me. I was actually thinking about hitting up some drive through but decided to just go in.

I parked and headed in. When you get into the joint, I would say it was a pretty cool pad. There is a painting of diamond head and the beach. It’s a nice painting. Tiki like booths and very colorful tables and chairs. If you look at the photo’s on the wall they are some what educational about our Hawaiian culture. I like the set up of the restaurant.

I ordered a chicken katsu plate and an order of their shanghi lumpia. The cashier, a Hispanic young male adult, was very kind when he took my order. He wasn’t rushing me with the “anything else, anything else” right after an order.

He ask for Identification when I used my debit card to pay. Most times they don’t ask. Our server was the complete opposite. I don’t remember what she was but she was a young female. She just walked up to our table with our order, placed it on the table, took the number (they give you a number to place on your table when you dine in) and left. There was no hello here is your order and no is there anything else I can get for you.

I received my order including my shanghi lumpia (with no dipping sauce!), my chicken katsu plate with just enough sauce for 4 pieces of chicken, a reasonable amount of mac salad, two scoops of rice, two pieces of chicken breast (the breading was too thick and the chicken taste like blood), and some diced cabbage for garnish.

I had to get up and stand in line all over again for dipping sauce. A simple “is there anything else I can get you?” would have saved inconvenience. Over all it’s a descent casual restaurant, a little too high priced, and could use some customer service tips like:

  1. Greeting the guest when they first walk through those doors.
  2. Smile and make eye contact
  3. Have an upbeat and positive energy
  4. Check for satisfaction
  5. Provide a warm farewell

These are all important factors for your business. Make the customer feel welcome and invite them back. If one customers experiences a bad visit they are more likely to tell 10 of their friends about that bad experience. If that customer loved their experience that customer is more likely to return and will might recommend a friend or two.

So you see how important customer service is. Until next time!

Hawaiian BBQ on Rainbow/i95

By: J. Fox

Its about 3:43 PM here in the Las Vegas valley and I am starving! I took a drive down the road from where I live. There are a couple of choices to choose from, restaurants that serve Hawaiian grindz. Today I think I will try a place called Hawaiian BBQ which is located at N. Rainbow/I95. I always pass this place on my way to work and returning. They always seem to have a good amount of people dining in. Not too busy not slow but just right, very steady. I decide to go check it out.

The location this restaurant is at is a pretty good location for anyone to do business. There is a variety of restaurants, book stores, jewelry stores, pet stores, baby stores, electronic stores, just a variety of shops where lots of people hang out. Parking was not a problem. Located right in front of the restaurant. As I walk in I checkout the decor and the cleanliness which is very clean but I don’t care much for the green and red decor.

To my right was a pretty good size cooler full or Arizona type ice teas in cans and some bottled beverages. Just beyond that is some chairs, above them is a big bright blue with yellow light up menu. The menu was overwhelming with lots to choice from. As the cashier greets me and stairs me down waiting anxiously to take my order, I feel a little rushed. Ordering the first thing is see which was a BBQ Mix plate and a couple of Musubi’s.

The prices were a little high but that seems to be a trend here in Vegas. As I wait for my order I check out what they have to offer on their big bright lit up menu. They have a good variety of main dishes to sides to desert. This place even has Malasada’s! How good are they? I have no clue.

So it seems like I been waiting forever for my order. I check my watch, there was no one ahead of me or after me. There is a family eating their meals at a table. I wondered what was taking them so long! I was just about losing my patience.

Finally! "Ma am your here’s your order." Thank you I replied to the cashier. "We have provided you with complementary Malasada’s." Omg! Free Malasada’s! After wondering what they taste like I get to sample these babies!

When I got home, I opened up my package. In it contained the Malasada’s, which were rubber like. They put them in the Styrofoam plates instead of a paper bag like they do back in Hawaii. They weren’t that great. At least I wouldn’t waste my money on them. My BBQ Mix plate was very good! It came with two scoops of rice, a scoop of mac salad, two pieces of BBQ chicken, a generous portion BBQ beef, and a strip of BBQ short ribs, beaded on a lot of vegetables. They also provide complementary Teriyaki sauce! My Musubi was ok, nothing special.

All in all I would definitely recommend Hawaiian BBQ. Tip, because of the long wait its a good idea to place a phone order first, they seem to make it faster or just as to deliver. They deliver!
